The Empty Waste
Falakian nobility differs widely from the nobility found in the other countries of Alyssia. Additionally, there is no feudal system in Falak. Nobles are granted lands and are almost always wealthy, but there is not the allegiance to lower nobles that you might find in a feudal society. Instead, the nobles are usually governing bodies that would be more akin to a governor or mayor in today's society.
Malik (king): This is reserved for a supreme ruler. There is no Malik in Falak. It has come to be more equivalent to a High King in the more common Alyssian nobility system.
Emir/Amir (Prince/Princess): The rulers of Falak are known as an Emir. There are no female rulers, rather the Amir would be the Emir's wife. The children of an Emir are not called Emir or Amir, but rather referred to as the Son of the Emir or Daughter of the Emir. The Emir is more equivalent to a king in the more common Alyssian nobility system.
Sultan: These are powerful men who have been appointed as rulers of major cities. There is a Sultan of Dunya and Furat. This would generally be equivalent to a earl/duke in the more common Alyssian nobility system.
Sheik: These are men who are appointed as rulers of minor towns and assistants to the Sultan of a major city. Additionally, each nomadic tribe is ruled by a sheik. This would generally be equivalent to a baron/earl in the more common Alyssian nobility system.
Faris: These are trained champions of Falak and would be the equivalent of a knight.
